Watchtower Library is a reference and research tool which contains publicationsby the Watchtower Society dated back from 1970, as well as, reference Bibles.The application is currently developed for the Windows operating system and thistutorial will guide you to install and run it onLinux. An application calledPlayOnLinux allows Linux users torun Windows programs in Linux.
NOTE: This tutorial is for installing the Watchtower Library and NOT theJW Library (which is currently developed for Android or iOS devices). JWLibrary (the phone and tablet version) can be installed from the Google PlayStore or Apple Store on Android and iOS respectively. You will need anInternet connection to complete this tutorial since most of the stuff will beinstalled online.

“Why use PlayOnLinux?”
PlayOnLinux is built using another application calledWine which provides a runtime(core technology) for running Windows applications on Linux. Using PlayOnLinuxmakes it more easy to use Wine to install Watchtower Library.
I will be using Ubuntu version 14.04 (a Linux distribution) for this tutorialbut you can equally follow along with any other Linux operating system usingsame or similar procedure.
Installing PlayOn Linux
PlayOnLinux is available in the software center so you can either search andinstall from there or you can use the Ubuntu command-line with the followingcommand;
OR on a Fedora-based distribution, you can use the command;
This will install the PlayOnLinux application online so make sure you haveInternet connection on your computer.
Installing Watchtower Library using PlayOnLinux
Now that we have PlayOnLinux installed, we can now use it to install Watchtowerlibrary.
You may contact your local Kingdom Hall for a copy of the Watchtower Libraryapplication if you do not have a copy already. Currently, each new versioncomes every year so you may have to reinstall again when there is a newerversion.
Lauching PlayOnLinux
Once you have installed PlayOnLinux, you can launch it from your applicationsmenu. When launched, it will look similar to the image (screenshot) below;

Installing Watchtower Library
To begin with Watchtower Library installation, click on the Install button asindicated in the screenshot above. This will launch a dialog which will fetchall the list of applications supported officially in PlayOnLinux as show below;

NOTE I will be using the 2015 edition of the Watchtower Library todemonstrate so I do not guarantee that any other version (newer or older) willwork with this same process. However, this should also work for the 2014edition.
Look for Watchtower Library 2014 from the list of applications supported, eitherby scrolling down or using the search entry on-top of the list as shown below;

As you can see, the Watchtower Library 2014 edition is the only option, howeverthe 2015 edition will also work. Select Watchtower Library 2014 and click onthe Install button beneath to proceed with the installation. This will launcha dialog (Wizard) which will assist you with the installation process as showbelow;

Click on the Next button to continue. The installer will present you withthree options;
- Overwrite - Used this option when you want to reinstall WatchtowerLibrary on PlayonLinux again, especially if you cannot launch an existinginstallation.
- Erase - Use this option if you want to completely remove (wipe out) anexisting Watchtower Library installation from PlayOnLinux to install a freshcopy again. This option come in handy for first-time installation or when youare installing a newer Watchtower Library version.
- Abort Installation - This option will stop the installation process andreturn back to the main PlayOnLinux application window.
I will select Option 2 and click Next to proceed. You will now be presentedwith another dialog with two options as show below;

- Use a setup file on my computer - Use this option if you have copied theWatchtower Library application files onto your computer.
- Use CD-ROMS(s) - Use this option to install from a DVD disk whichcontains the Watchtower Library (make sure you have inserted the disk intoyour computer before proceeding with this option).
I will select Option 1 and click Next after which I will be presented with anddialog with a button labelled Browse. Click on that button to select theWatchtower Library application executable labelled Setup.exe from yourcomputer as shown below;

If you select option 2, browse to the CD ROM to select the executable. Theremay be other executables for Windows Phone (those old Windows Phones) but thatis not covered in this tutorial.
After selecting the executable, click Next to proceed. This will launch adialog to configure and install the necessary files required to be able to runthe Watchtower Library in PlayOnLinux online so make sure you have Internetconnection. The process may take some few minutes (at least in my experience) tocomplete so be patient when it seem to be delaying - this may take a littlelonger especially when you have a slow Internet connection. When this process isfinished, you will be presented with a Finish button, so click on it to finishthe configuration part.
After everything is successful, PlayOnLinux will immediately launch anotherwindow (an installation wizard) which will take your through the process ofinstalling the actual Watchtower Library application. Proceed by click next,next, next… (affirm the default options). Once the installation is complete,PlayOnLinux application should have Watchtower Library listed in the main windowas shown below;

Managing Wine versions
We are almost done except that the version of Wine installed by default inPlayOnlinux does not work for running the installed Watchtower Libraryapplication. Therefore, we will have to install an OLDER version (version1.7.38 at the time of this tutorial). Click on the Tools menu from thePlayOnLinux main window and select Manage Wine versions as show below;

This will present you with a dialog which shows the available Wine version inthe left pane (fetched from the Wine project database) and those installed onyour computer in the right pane. On the left section, scroll to find version1.7.38, select it and click on the button labelled with the greater-thansymbol (>) in the middle to install it. This process may also take some fewminutes (again, depending on your internet connection speed :) ) so be patient.After version 1.7.38 of Wine has been installed, it will show up in the rightpane as show below;

NOTE: You may also install version 1.7.35 in addition to version 1.7.38 forsafe keeping.
Once this is done, close the dialog to return to the main PlayOnLinux window tonow launch (run) Watchtower Library.

Launching Watchtower Library
Select it from the main window and click on the Run button at the top. Thiswill launch the splash screen of the Watchtower Library application after whichyour will be presented with the main window of Watchtower Library.

I am often asked by blog readers and users of my Windows Phone apps (MinistryMate, AssemblyMate, and TMS Tracker) if its possible to install the Watchtower Library program on their smartphone running Windows Phone 7.0002The question is understandable, because a few years ago, a version of the program was made compatible with Windows Mobile devices.0002And when running the setup for Watchtower Library, you are asked whether you want to install it on your computer or your Windows Mobile phone.
Is It Possible?

In a word, no.0002Unfortunately, since Windows Phone 7 was a complete reboot of Microsoft’s mobile operating system, programs are not compatible across the two platforms. I know this is particularly disappointing for a lot of people.0002I for one was excited about the launch of Windows Phone 7 because I anticipated having the Watchtower Library app on my phone.
Also, as of now, I am not aware of any effort being put forth by Watch Tower Bible and Tract Society (the publishers of Watchtower Library) to make a version that is compatible with the current Windows Phone platform.0002If anything, I could foresee a version that would run on tablets, such as iPad and Android, and perhaps future Windows 8 devices. I’m sure such a broad approach would be well-received by the friends. But my fear is that with the mobile computing landscape changing so rapidly, they may decide that it’s impossible to keep up, and their time, energy and resources could be better spent elsewhere.

The good news is there is a way to get the data from the Watchtower Library on your Windows Phone in a useable format.0002The best approach is to install an app called iSilo, available here in the Marketplace for $9.99.0002iSilo is a versatile e-book/document reader, available on a wide variety of software platforms.0002Once you have it installed on your phone, you will then want to locate and download the Watchtower Library data in a format that iSilo can read.0002Here, you have to be conscious of the terms of use outlined in the Introductory Letter found in the Watchtower Library program.0002It says in part:
0002What constitutes proper use? Watchtower Library has been designed for your personal use. Hence, you may copy, print, or excerpt from the data for your personal use.
